Cold and clear in morning and then turning very nice for about 6 hours, only to see the cold return with more cold and snow predicted for the coming week. During the nice weather window, we were able to work cut cows into two groups. Older group (201) will stay in SNG7 and 8. Younger group (257) will stay in NBW3. Two cows went into the calves. Next time I will leave the good conditioned young cows with the older group.
Feed: YG 3b and straw; OG 2b and straw; calves 3b and straw.

Wake to cold and drifting SW winds. Not severe but uncomfortable. Some warming resulting from the SW winds. Feed: Cows 4b (due to trailing); 3’s 1b + 2 straw; calves 3b. Trailed cows into SNG7 where 3’s had been. Short-eared owls are seen feeding along creek on west end of Big Wall.
Colder and bitter SW winds return with first real drifting of blowing snow. Feed: 3’s 1b + straw; calves 3b. Moved 3’s across road into NBW3 first split. We plan to trail main cow herd to corrals tomorrow in preparation of cutting 4’s and older cows to join the 3’s, thus a little better feed and less competition for fed hay.
A very sweet day with a light breeze, clear skies, and warming temperatures. I actually did some work outside without gloves. Feed: Cows 6b; 3’s 1b + straw; calves 3b. Come evening all the animals trailed out to graze. Ryan and I prepared water and fences in BW3 for the 3’s to move tomorrow to fresh feed.
Clear cold night allowing full moon to fully express itself with and for us. Morning begins with uptick in SW winds. Feed: 3’s 2b+straw; Calves 3b+straw. Today was beginning to feel like last year-snow beginning to crust and tough for cows to get to the grass. We will see if the weather warms as they are predicting. Reports that this may be the second coldest February on record.
Deep cold continues, and winds remain compassionately calm. Likely to change tomorrow with predicted warming temperatures, which rarely arrive without a push from somewhere. Feed: 3’s 1 +straw, calves 3.
A little colder and light wind. Feed: Cows 6b, 3’s 1b/2 straw, calves 3b + 2 straw. Cows at evening called into NG5. Too cold and awkward with weather conditions to split.
Cold and light snow return. Over a foot of new snow has fallen since early February. Feed: 3’s 2b + straw, Calves 3b + straw.
Sunshine and warmer temps return. Feed: 3’s 1b + straw, calves 3b + straw. Cows move into second split in NG6. Pair of short eared owls north of house seen in timber, while rolling up temporary fence.
Wake to 3 inches of new snow and continued cold. Feed: Cows 6b, 3’s 1b, Calves 2b + straw.
