Where: BW-8 to L-2 for cows and LS-9-10 for calves. Cows break into L-2 (crested wheat). I temporary fenced the cows into middle section of L-2 rather than push them back as I needed to leave for Colorado early afternoon. Calves moved into first split in LW-10 which is an extra graze over. We will hold them there until Monday when we can move to a fresh paddock. Tyler returned from his NAP workshop and will move cows back into their rotation tomorrow. Weather: Chilly and overcast most of day.
Where: BW-8 for cows and LS-9 for calves. Calves using up feed in last split in LS-9. I made two splits for the cows. Heifers (58) mixed in the with cows are doing nicely. Hope to get all the heifers moved into the cows after Tyler gets back. Red-tailed Hawk staking our ground just east of the house with some sandstone outcrop and pine trees. I hope to find his nest this year. Weather: 29 and cloudy with light snow.
Where: BW-8 for cows and LS-9 for calves. Cows into 37 acres split. Calves into 17 acre split. Weather: Light flurries and not much accumulation.
Where: BW-8 for cows and LS-9 for calves. No cow moves. Calves moved into 17acre split. Moves water belly calf into corral. Weather: 26 and cloudy winds from the north and cloudy.
Where: BW-8 for cows and LS-9 for calves. Cows moved into 37-acre split. Calves moved into 17-acre split. Water belly calf a concern. Two bald eagles seen near cows. Weather: Sunny early and cool turning to showers in the afternoon.
Where: BW-8 for cows and LS-9 for calves. Cows moved once on 22 acres. Calves move into a 22-acre split. Calves got out for a split. Weather: Chilly yet warmer and skies mostly clear. Every afternoon some melting and shrinking of remaining drifts-mostly on north sloping ridges.
Where: BW-8 for cows and LS-9 for calves. No moves for cows (feed day). Calves move to next split (12 acres?) after we cut 58 heifers out. Max and I trailed the cows to BW-8. We are in unchartered territory with this decision to mix the cows and calves. Best possible outcome is heifers can stay with the cow mob up until branding, or during the biggest share of the active growing season. Calves/yearlings worked calmly in corrals and trailed nicely to cows. Nice group to work with. Oh, I went to board the plane for California, arriving at the airport at 4:00 am, only to realize my ticket was for tomorrow the 24th. Of course, this unfortunate mistake created a whole day of possibilities that I availed myself to good advantage. Weather: Cold fog drifts over the ranch in the morning shifting to crisp clear skies in the afternoon.
Where: BW-9-8 for cows and LS-9 for calves. In the morning we trail cows out of BW-2 into small split near reservoir in BW-9, and then later afternoon into BW-8 (about 40 acres in first split) where hopefully the cows will stay while I am away to California. No moves for the calves. Geese numbers growing around the reservoir am more singing meadowlarks. |
